Party Chairman Bart De Wever

Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie (N-VA)
Bart De Wever (21 December 1970) is a trained historian and worked for the KU Leuven as a scientific researcher for a while. In 2004, he was elected a Member of the Flemish Parliament and also became Party Chairman shortly afterwards. He successfully participated in the negotiations on forming a Flemish Government. In 2006, De Wever was elected a councillor of the Antwerp Municipal Council. In 2007 he moved from the Flemish Parliament to the federal Chamber of Representatives. He led the N-VA delegation in the 2007 federal government negotiations, although unsuccessfully this time. In 2009 and 2010, he led the N-VA to two successive spectacular electoral victories and turned the N-VA into the largest party in Flanders and even in Belgium. He is currently a Member of the Flemish Parliament and of the Senate, as a Community Senator. During the last elections, in 2010, he personally received 785,776 preferential votes, something only a few politicians before him have managed.

Flemish Vice Minister-President Geert Bourgeois

Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie (N-VA)
Following a career at all the echelons of the N-VA’s predecessor, the Volksunie, Geert Bourgeois (6 July 1951) became a Representative in the federal Chamber of Representatives in 1995. He focused mainly on legal matters and Community affairs. After the breakup of the Volksunie, Geert Bourgeois and his supporters founded the Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie (N-VA - New-Flemish Alliance) in 2001, of which he was the first Chairman, until 2004. From 2004 to 2008, Geert Bourgeois was the Flemish Minister for Administrative Affairs, Foreign Policy, Tourism and Media. On 11 July 2009, he became Flemish Vice Minister-President and Minister for Administrative Affairs, Local and Provincial Government, Civic Integration, Tourism and the Vlaamse Rand (Flemish Periphery of Brussels). Bourgeois personifies the N-VA’s expertise in policy issues, thoroughness and consistency.

Flemish Minister Philippe Muyters

Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie (N-VA)
Philippe Muyters (6 December 1961) is a licentiate in Applied Economic Sciences. Until he entered active politics in July 2009, he was the Managing Director of the employers’ organization VOKA (a Flemish employers’ organization). Before that, he was the head of the Flanders Social and Economic Council. Philippe Muyters was appointed Flemish Minister for Finance, Budget, Work, Town and Country Planning and Sport in 2009. Muyters, in terms of management, highly values cooperation between various partnerships and he stresses the importance of administrative simplification.

Speaker of the Flemish Parliament Jan Peumans

Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie (N-VA)
Jan Peumans (6 January 1951) is a trained sociologist. Between 1991 and 2004, he was the Marketing and Strategy Director of the Flemish Transport Company “De Lijn”. In light of this experience, he has become the N-VA’s mobility expert. In 2004, he became a Member of the Flemish Parliament for the N-VA. From 2007 to 2009, Peumans was the N-VA fraction Floor Leader in the Flemish Parliament. The press declared him the “hardest working Flemish representative” in 2009. After the Flemish elections of 7 June 2009, he became the Speaker of the Flemish Parliament.

Member of the European Parliament Frieda Brepoels

Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie (N-VA)
Frieda Brepoels (7 May 1955) is a trained architect. She entered politics and the Volksunie, the predecessor of the N-VA, at the age of 27. She was elected to the Limburg Provincial Council in 1985. From 1987 to 1991 and from 1999 to 2003, she held a seat in the federal Parliament, where she was the group Chairperson during her last three years of office. After the breakup of the Volksunie, she was one of the founders of the N-VA, together with Geert Bourgeois. Since 2004, Frieda Brepoels has been a Member of the European Parliament for the N-VA. In 2009, she received the MEP award from the Parliament Magazine in the Trade category. In 2009, she was re-elected as a Member of the European Parliament and she is a Member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), the EuroMed delegation and the delegation for relations with Japan. She is a Substitute on the Human Rights (DROI) and the Transport and Tourism (TRAN) committees, and is part of the delegation for relations with the Mashreq countries (Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria).
